Perez de Cuellar has surgery
NZPA-Reuter New York The quadruple coronary bypass surgery performed on the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr Javier Perez de Cuellar, adds a new element of uncertainty to the battered. fortunes of the United Nations., Mr Perez de Cuellar, a 66-year-old Peruvian, was appointed to a five-year
term of office that expires at the end of this year. Until now there had been wide speculation that he might agree, reluctantly, to accept reelection, possibly for a briefer spell. Yesterday’s surgery, which was said to be very successful, still could cast doubt on this scenario, say United Nations analysts.
Earlier this year, when there was no public suspicion oi his cardiovascular problem, Mr Perez de Cuellar said he wanted to quit at the end of the year. He also reminded them that when he was elected in December, 1981, he had said it was his first and last term.
Mr Perez de Cuellar, recently bought an apart-
ment in Madrid, and might now prefer to retire at the end of the year with a generous United Nations pension. Some United Nations members might wish to seek a younger person to head the secretariat, which has nearly 12,000 staff in duty stations ground the world. No clear alternative candidate has so far emerged. A ■ ’ '
