Railways plans truck overhaul

PA Wellington 1 The Railways Corporation will overhaul and repaint luggage trucks on Cook Strait rail ferries following complaints that the vehicles were not roadworthy. Railways assistant general manager, Mr Euan McQueen, said the National Union of Railwaymen had been correct in raising the complaint, as the trucks were old and badly in need of repair.

"One truck which the union complained about

simply shouldn't have been on the road, so it’s clear we have a problem,” he said.

“The solution is to repair them, and make a few changes to the way they are used.”

The trucks were used primarily to carry passengers’ luggage on and off ferries at Wellington and Picton terminals, and probably travelled only 100 km a year.

The overhaul would be completed in time for the Christmas and New-Year rush when the trucks came in for heaviest use.
