Curfew will be retained
PA Whangarei A curfew on the young people of Te Hapua, on Parengarenga Harbour in Northland, will be retained, by popular demand. This month there was talk that the 10 p.m. curfew would be lifted and reinstated only during school holidays. However, a public meeting has come out in favour of keeping the late night limit on the community’s 30 or so young people. Te Hapua, population 97, imposed its curfew about four months ago after problems with latenight wandering, alcohol, cannabis smoking, and petty crime. This included discovery of cannabis in a 13-year-old girl’s schoolbag and reports of children roaming until 3 a.m. The community took its problems in hand by imposing the curfew and setting up an entertainment programme.
