Two bomb scares
NZPA-Reuter Edinburgh
Police dealt with two bomb scares — one inside Meadowbank Stadium — just hours before Britain’s Prince Philip was due to open the Commonwealth Games yesterday.
Several teams in training were evacuated and bomb disposal experts called when a package left in the foyer of the Commonwealth pool aroused suspicion, a
police spokesman said. It turned out to be a leather case.
Thirty minutes later and less than two hours before the start of the opening ceremony, the bomb squad was called to deal with a second suspect package in the main Meadowbank stand. But the alert subsided when the package turned out to be a discarded lunch box, the spokesman said.
