Accountants can fight for work
Chartered accountants are now allowed to compete for audits and some other types of accounting and advisory work.
A recent meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Society of Accountants made changes to the society’s Code of Ethics, which will allow chartered accountants in public practice to submit proposals to clients for audit work when invited to do so. This will apply even where another firm is already undertaking that work.
But, those intending to tender for the audit work are expected to advise those already carrying it out before they submit their proposal. The society will continue to ban competitive bidding, which it defines as offering services for a fee which bears little relation to the scope or quality of the work. Chartered accountants may also submit proposals to potential clients for areas of work not already being carried out by other accountants.
