Yorks. opener’s century
NZPA-Reuter London Ashley Metcalfe took full advantage of the absence of Geoff Boycott and Martyn Moxon to re-establish himself as Yorkshire's natural opener in the English County Cricket Championship match against Kent yesterday.
Metcalfe scored his third century of the season, reaching 1000 runs in the process, as he tore the Kent attack to shreds, with Boycott and Moxon missing through injury and test duty respectively.
The Yorkshire batsman grabbed the chance to press his claims to move up the order, by smashing 123 off 129 deliveries, and dominated a stand of 124 in 29 overs with Neil Hartley.
Tim Robinson, fighting to regain his place in the England team, made 97 In 220 minutes in Nottinghamshire’s total of 350 for eight against Lancashire.
The Australian captain, Allan Border, scored more than 50 runs for the tenth time in the championship this season, but Essex still struggled against Surrey at the Oval.
Scores at close of play on the opening day of three-day county championship matches yesterday: At Leicester: Glamorgan 48/2 after 17.3 overs,, v. Leicestershire. Rain prevented play after tea. At Portsmouth: Hampshire 166/6 after 55 overs, v. Derbyshire. Rain prevented play after tea.
At Hove: Worcestershire 280/6 dec. in 103.3 overs (T. Curtis 92, D. Smith 63, D. D’Oliveira 62), Sussex 13 for none after two overs.
At Southport: Nottinghamshire 350/8 (T. Robinson 97, C. Broad 51), v. Lancashire. Scarborough: Yorkshire 250/4 after 70 overs (A. Metcalfe 123, P. Robinson 66 n. 0.), v. Kent. At The Oval: Essex 243/9 after 92 overs (A. Border 52), v. Surrey.
