Cashmere goats sell well
Cashmere-bearing does attracted far more interest from buyers than angora does at a goat sale in Christchurch yesterday.
Fourteen cashmere does sold at auction for an average price of $570, while only one angora doe changed hands.
The limited demand for angoras resulted in nine does being passed in at prices of $l5OO to $5OOO. The only angora sold, a Braemore hogget from J. G. and H. E. Gunn, of Darfield, made $3OOO.
In the cashmere section which contained 39 does, J. P. and C. G. Conlan, of Oamaru, sold six mixed-age does mated to an Australian buck, at $6OO to $7OO, and two six-tooths at $6OO. The fleece of the Australian sire, when tested as a four-tooth, had a micron count of 18.25 and a down weight of 354 grams. Two mated, mixed-age cashmere does from Utopia Farm, Halswell, made $550, two from D. R. Taylor, Temuka, sold at $5OO, and R. L. Goodson, Waimate, received $4OO for two more.
The only buck offered, a four-tooth imported from Australia was passed in at $9500. .
