Strike ‘not crucial’

PA Hamilton The strike that has halted repair work being done on cracks in the Auckland Harbour bridge is not crucial at this stage, says the Ministry of Works.

Welders from the Ministry’s Wairakei geothermal projects operation are flown up to Auckland each week-end to work five nights of 12-hour shifts welding up the cracks.

The Ministry’s Auckland district civil engin-

eer, Mr Clive Preston-

Thomas, said the longer the stoppage, the longer would be the delay in getting heavy traffic back on the clip-on sections of the bridge. Repair work on the

cracks is not due to be completed until July next year. Geothermal drilling and support workers at Wairakei have stopped work until Monday morning in protest at job losses

at the Ministry’s Wairakei operation.
