Riccarton hopefuls trying to extend winning sequence in Brabazon Handicap

By

J. J. BOYLE

Riccarton stables have come up with the last four Brabazon Handicap winners, but their hopefuls might have trouble extending the sequence in the Christchurch Hunt’s feature flat race tomorrow.

In the Glen was last year’s winner before having to bow to three North Islanders in the Winter Cup. Jendra was a surprise winner in 1984, Dreamville the successful favourite in 1983. In 1982 Magellan was a popular fancy, and won, but for all that was held in no high public regard for the Winter Cup, a race he won at the expense of the favourite Jambeau. Noble Note, top weight with 57kg in tomorrow’s race, was an expensive failure in the Brabazon last year, and fared no better in the Winter Cup. In the meantime he has won three races including the Jockey Club Handicap — Churchill Stakes double at the New Zealand Cup meeting. His form did not hold up so well into the late autumn but he has come along well, looking bright and acting keenly after a spell, and there was supporting evidence of his well-being in his zestful run fresh up at Ashburton. Ashburton was also the starting point for Reingard, which had been away from racing since last spring. He has established his class over middle distances but the Brabazon should show

light on his progress for a spring campaign in Australia. Isla Bijou, from Riverton, and Hills Peak, from Wingatui, toiled rewardingly at Riccarton at Easter. The performance that achieved victory for Isla Bijou in the Lion Brown Stakes was chock-full of merit, and if the star of Bill Hillis’s Riverton team manages anything comparable fresh up tomorrow she could shut out the best of the others. Hills Peak won the Great Easter over the Brabazon distance before an unplaced run in Isla Bijou’s Lion Brown Stakes. Danseuse Royale, with seasoned condition to back up an impressive record, makes obvious appeal. She had ill-luck in the running at Washdyke last week but has won at her three previous starts, one of them over 1600 m at Riccarton. Nearco Fair has done much of his racing in Australia, unrewardingly this season, but with better results for three wins for the Mosgiel owner, Mr Jim Brown, last season. Black Arrow’s four-year-old programme this season has yielded only

one win. Something better might have been expected, but he is of an age where he could improve to fulfill all his early promise. Il Commandante, winner of three races including the Southland Guineas earlier in the season, will be one of the more interesting contenders in the Beefeater Camla Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double. He is owned in Sydney by Mr Albert Meo, and, all going well, he is likely to do his spring racing in Australia. Closest to him in the weights is Frontiersman, which is trained at Riccarton, but has done his latest racing for Dave Kerr’s stable in Queensland. Frontiersman has shown a preference for soft tracks. He did not have much luck in that regard in Queensland, but his win, in conditions to his liking, at Riccarton at Easter might have a bigger bearing on his prospects tomorrow. Burdite, an improving second at Washdyke last week, and Marche Noir, which has shown at times a likely talent with clouddropping runs from the back, appeal most of the others.

Race 6 T 2.05 PYNE GOULD GUINNESS HOMEBY STEEPLECHASE $12,500; 4000 m 1 3535 Bymai 8 N. Ridley 65.0 Carried 2.5 kg more when second to Sweeney Todd in this race last year. Followed up with second in Grand National. Has been unable to improve on minor piacings this year, but his solid Riccarton record gives him strong chance of reaching one of the places. 2 1143 Master Bijou 4 A. Cowan 64.0 This year’s Otago Steeplechase winner. Has since recorded fourth in Wellington Steeplechase and third at Washdyke last week. 3 1147 Sir Zatopek 7 R. Collett 63.5 Followed up good form in south with fourth in Nescafe at Ellerslie. Should be sharpened by last week’s race at Washdyke. 4 6314 Leading Ridge 1 S. Jenkins 61.0 Easy winner at Waimate but found the opposition stronger at Washdyke last week. 5 3321 Coharken 5 A. Mavor 60.0 Was rewarded for consistent placed runs with win at Washdyke last week. Newcomer to this country, but looks competent jumper and should go close. 6 0020 Free To Choose 3 59.0 Patchy jumping has landed him in trouble this winter. Distant second behind Leading Ridge at Waimate. 7 7145 Mr Big 2 59.0 Won at Ashburton three starts back. Two starts since were at Washdyke. 8 3155 Silver Bayou 6 59.0 Latest run was at Trentham. Most recent win was in 4000 m steeplechase Washdyke, June 6. Race 7 D, TF 2.45 ASHLEY MEATS BRABAZON HANDICAP $9000; 1400 m 1 3466 Noble Note 11 P. Robinson 56.0 Good run for second to Famillion at Ashburtop. Failed over shorter sprint trip at Washdyke last week. 3 1625 Hills Peak 12 H. Goscomb 55.5 Won Great Easter over this distance on last campaign here and since placed at Gore. 4 88 Reingard 3 R. McCann 55.5 Has established his class over more ground. Failed fresh up at Ashburton, but still worth a second thought. Galloped weil yesterday. 5 1112 Danseuse Royale 4. . . T. Matthews 55.0 Unlucky when second at Washdyke last week. Win the time before was over 1600 m at Riccarton. One of better chances

6 Nearco Fair 14 S. Anderton 55.0 Failed to win in Australia earlier in season. 7 2140 Bfovinnki 8 L. Didham 54.0 rresh start Developed good form over middle distances on last campaign 8 5011 isla Bijou 6 J. Dowling 54.0 First start since Easter when she was an impressive winner in successive starts at Riverton and Riccarton. 9 1121 Apprize 10 R. Bruce 53.0 Narrow winner 1200 m at Gore, June 10. Found Miss March too good over Brabazon distance at Wingatui. 10 5534 Black Arrow 5 J. Pankhurst 52.5 Two promising runs this time up, and should be thoroughly fitted for this. 11 6473 Blarney Fair 13 J. Jamieson 51.5 Every chance when third (Epatante 1) at Washdyke, July 4. 12 6070 Donizetti 9 J. Cameron 51.5 Showed nothing when resuming at Oamaru. June 16. 13 1781 Red Sovereign 7 C. Crowe 51.0 Narrow winner class 3,1200 m at Washdyke last week. 14 4588 Taxtale 1 G. Kiliickso.s First start since February. Won’t find this easy. 15 5006 Adies King 16 50.0Has not done enough to recommend for this. 16 3164 Don Bruce 2 S. Reid 50.0 Only so-so fourth in weak sprint field at Washdyke. 17 9965 Hotu Hui Lad 17 D. Morel 50.0 Fair run at Washdyke but over-all form not attractive. Race 9 B 3.55 BEEFEATER CAMLA HANDICAP $3600; 1400 m 1 7191 El Commandante 11. . . L. Didham 57.0 Won Southland Guineas and feature 1600 m race for three-year-olds in autumn. Top chance if he is attuned for this. 2 0013 Frontiersman 8 T. Matthews 56.0 Has raced unrewardingly in Brisbane since third behind El Commandante at W'ingatui in April. In the boom for this after good gallop yesterday. 3 2030 Mill Creek L 0 A. Robinson 55.0 Form too patchy to inspire confidence. 4 9208 Gums A Calling 4 .... J. Woledge 54.0 Did not show much at Ashburton last start. 5 6919 Buller 3 D. Poweil 52.5 Cleared maiden ranks at Waimate, then failed at Washdyke. 6 8074 Marche Noir 6 C. Roberts 52.5 Encouraging fresh start at Waimate. Disappointing last time up but looked promising earlier. 7 0013 Silver Shadow 12 J. Dowling 52.5 Won this distance Oamaru, June 16, before battling third at Ashburton. 8 0800 Tuahiwi Girl 12 D. Morel 52.5 Form has slumped in recent starts. 9 8848 Waiiaki Lass 5 P. Atkinson 52.5 Not the worst, judged on last two runs, both on this course. 10 6752 Burdite 1 J. Pankhurst 52.0 Weil beaten by Wentworth Heights at Washdyke last week, but could be improved by that placed run. 11 0480 The Scud 9 C. Edmond 52.0 Back to flat after hurdling. 13 0009 Ratify 2 51.0 Has done recent racing as hurdler. Race 8 T 3.20 SECOND GOULD HANDICAP
