Fowler decides against world titles

NZPA staff correspondent

The top New Zealand road race cyclist Brian Fowler, has decided he will not compete in the world cycling championships at Colorado Springs in the United States next month.

The cycling team manager, Bruce Dawe, said Fowler would have been New Zealand’s strongest chance at the world event “He decided he would be away from home for too long if he went to Colorado Springs,” said Mr Dawe.

Fowller, from Christchurch, was in Europe and England for five weeks before the Commenwealth Games, where competition starts tomorrow.

In that time he has had two good wins, winning the prestige Isle of Man road race and then last Sunday winning at Glasgow. He also competed In the Tour of Switzerland race.

The world championships, a far higher standard than the Commonwealth Games, do not bpgin until August 26.
