Nuclear stance
Sir, —Following a meeting I attended by proponents of a concept called “Beyond War," and after reading an article in "The Press” (July 17) entitled “Tanks or tractors,” I wish to raise some points. War, as we know it, is obsolete. In a nuclear conflict there are no winners as not only humanity will be destroyed but also the ecosystem in which we live. A nuclear war in the Northern Hemisphere will
disrupt global weather patterns, leading to a “nuclear winter” and global starvation from climate changes and disruption to normal food movements between nations. Social structures, as we know them, will collapse. The U.S.S.R. cannot afford to continue the arms race. Does the U.S. or the U.S.S.R. really want to conquer the other? Who would benefit and how? We must all do our utmost to stop this drift towards a nuclear holocaust — Yours, etc., "
