Coffee, margarine among price increases
The grocery "basket” has now reached the $205 mark. After a $1.70 increase
last month, the total cost of the basket is now $205.78. The big increases have
been in coffee, which went up from $4.55 to $4.78 for a IOOg jar, margarine from $1.49 to $1.64, dishwashing detergent from $2.09 to $2.28, toilet paper $1.99 to $2.19 for a four-pack, eggs from $1.86 to $2.11 for a dozen, and bacon from $2.09 to $2.83 for a 250 g pack.
There were smaller increases in prices for flour (up 4c), soap powder (up 8c) and soap (up 3c).
The most significant falls were in the prices of sugar and cheese. A I.skg bag of sugar was priced at $l.ll this week, compared with $1.29 last month, and a Ikg block of cheese cost 23c less.
There were also decreases in the prices of peaches (down 7c), baked beans (down 6c) and pet
food (down 7c). At the same time last year the “basket” cost
$198.33. There has been an increase of $7.45 since then.
