Aust, aviation chances seen
PA Invercargill New Zealand airlines should push to compete on the Australian domestic commercial market, the Opposition spokesman on overseas trade, Mr Warren Cooper, has said.
Aviation interests should prepare a case for submission to the Australian Foreign Investment Control Board for entry to the Australian market, he said.
The recent Newman-Brierley-Ansett entry into New Zealand would "inevitably” meant Air New Zealand and Mount Cook Airlines would have spare capacity. New Zealand in Australia would be supportive he said.
“I doubt many Australian consumers will continue to accept being hostage to price fixing by Australian airlines and Ansett,” he said.
“A spillover of their frustration could create a tremendous opportunity
for New Zealand interests to compete and the political will for change is growing. “There is no real reason why a more privatised Air New Zealand and Mount Cook should not prepare the ground work for entry into Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth. "Australia’s two-airline cartel is unlikely to survive,” he said.
Mr Cooper said people in the agricultural sector would have no sympathy for Air New Zealand losing the monopoly it had enjoyed. He said arguments over counter space, baggage and other facilities were “time-consum-ing protectionism.”
“We should be aiming to promote and launch Kiwi enterprise which carves its share out of the Australian domestic aviation sparket,” Mr Cooper
