Three men facing charges of breaking into three Christchurch primary schools were each remanded in custody for a week by Judge Frampton in the District Court yesterday. Sean Kiwi, aged 19, is charged with breaking into the Wainoni Primary School on July 20.

Steven David McDonald, aged 17, is charged with breaking into the Aranui Primary School, the next day. Edward James Momo, aged 31, faces charges of burgling the Woolston Primary School between April 12 and June 30. No pleas were entered by the defendants, each of whom is unemployed. SMASHED WINDOW A woman who became annoyed because a public telephone was not working tore the handpiece out and threw it at a nearby window for which $950 compensation was sought. Evelyn Moana Whittaker, aged 30, a solo mother, admitted charges of intentionally damaging a window belonging to Hurst and Drake, Ltd, and wilfully damaging a telephone handpiece. Sergeant M. P.' Caldwell

said that at 10 p.m. on July 22 the defendant left a Chiistchurch hotel intending to ring for a taxi. Finding the public telephone was not working she threw the handpiece through a nearby window, he said. MACHETE

A man found in possession of a 12in long machete, with a 3in wide blade, in the public bar of a Christchurch hotel, told the police he planned to give it to a friend who was in trouble, said Sergeant Caldwell. Kevin John Dowling, aged 40, a sickness beneficiary, was convicted of the unlawful possession of an offensive weapon on the afternoon of July 3.

He was remanded to August 6 for a probation report and sentence. Sergeant Caldwell said the defendant entered a public bar, walked up to a man, pulled out the machete and made several threats.

He placed the machete back under his coat. He was swiftly escorted outside by bar staff.

Outside the hotel he again withdrew the machete and began “carrying on.”
