Colts’ revival not enough
In spite of basing camp in their opponent’s half for most of the second spell and scoring all their points after half-time, Country Colts were unable to peg back Town Colts and lost, 9-12, in their annual rugby fixture at Lancaster Park South yesterday. Country Colts tried desperately to gain the win achieved by their senior side against Town earlier in the season, and seemed likely to succeed when they came back from 0-12
at half-time to 9-12 with 20min remaining. At that point Town Colts were struggling to match the increased tempo of the game and the forward advantage they had in the first 40min had been negated by a more earnest Country forward effort.
However, Country could not add to its tally in the last quarter and it survived a few anxious moments itself towards the finish. Three missed penalty kicks did not help
its cause. For Town Colts, Andrew Simcock and Shayne Philpott scored tries both of which were converted by Philpott. Dean Wilson scored a try for Country Colts and Jim Graham kicked the conversion and a penalty goal. • Mid-Canterbury retained the Hannan Shield with a 23-6 win over South Canterbury in their representative match at Ashburton yesterday, reports PA. Scores: Mid-Canterbury 23 (Paul Wallis 2, John McLay, Robin Thomas, Hamish Molloy, tries; Murray Roulston penalty). South Canterbury 6
(Steven Todd try, Alister Stevenson conversion). © Nelson Bays earned two national third division rugby championship points when it beat North Otago, 19-9, at Motueka yesterday. The wing, Andrew Verdonk, had scored North Otago’s try in the first half with the full-back, Michael Kenworthy, kicking a conversion and a drop goal. The Nelson Bays first-five, Stewart Dayman, provided 14 points from four penalties and a drop goal with the prop, Phil Salton, sealing Nelson Bays’ victory with a try 12 minutes from full-time.
