Ford plans a Sierra saloon
Aimed at withstanding the challenge of Vauxhall’s Cavalier saloon and Austin Rover’s Montego, Ford is likely to launch a booted Sierra saloon at the Paris Motor Show in October.
It will be the main weapon in Ford’s bid to win back the many fleet buyers who abandoned the marque when Ford replaced its Cortina with the Sierra four-door hatchback.
However, the most exciting version of- the Sierra saloon will - be powered by a detuned edition of the 16-valve 149 kW turbocharged engine, used in the Cosworth
Sierra Group A competition car.
This particular car will have four-wheel-drive and anti-lock braking as standard equipment when it is launched next year. New six cylinder 2.4 litre and 2.9 litre engines will replace the current 2.2 litre and 2.8 litre units used in existing Sierras. But in the new line-up, the 1.6, 1.8, 2 litre and 2 litre petrol injection engines are likely to be of more interest to fleet buyers. By adding a cavernous boot to the Sierra, Ford evidently hopes that the car will be more acceptable visually than the original hatchback shape.
