Yen takes shine off Japan’s new cars

The hardening Japanese yen has taken some of the sparkle off the crop of four-cylinder Japanese cars that now dominate the New Zealand new car market. Australian-built sixcylinder saloons — particularly the Ford range — are now attracting much interest among car buyers.

The trend towards the sixes began with the reduction of sales tax in late 1984, but has become more marked in recent months.

The six-cylinder market share has grown from 5.3 per cent in 1984, to 8.4 per cent in 1986, and 9.8 per cent in the first quarter of this year. The lightweight Australian dollar and the lower price of petrol have favoured Australian car sales in New Zealand.

Ford New Zealand, Ltd, has reintroduced its 3.3 litre Falcon in recent months. It retails for less than $27,000 and, at that price, it undercuts a number of the better locallyassembled four-cylinder Japanese cars.
