Fine Arts slides shown

Seven slide evenings will be held at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts in the next two months. The head of the School of Fine Arts, Professor H. J. Simpson took 6000 photographs while on study leave overseas last year to include in the school’s slide collection. In addition to architecture, painting and sculpture he photographed furniture, pottery, metalwork (including gold and silver) ivories, glass, books, and manuscripts and made sets of slides on topics such as the history of writing and writing materials. Professor Simpson has arranged seven weekly slide presentations, at which up to 80 slides will be screened, in the school at Ham, beginning today at 8 p.m. until 9.15 p.m. He says the presentations

are not lectures but will be organised round a theme. The programme is: July 23, English architecture; July 30, Works from 3000 BC to 400 AD from the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum; August 6, Medieval and Gothic works from the museums; August 13, English and European furniture 1300 to 1800 AD September 10; Books and manuscripts from 700 AD to 1700 showing how tools and materials influenced the evolution of scripts; September 17, Pottery and bronzes; and September 24, Turkish art and architecture. A further 50 slides of The Church of the Holy Cross on the island of Akhtamer will be shown after a brief interval for those who may have a special interest in this church.
