Colombian killings resume
NZPA-Reuter Bogota Six people were killed yesterday when guerrillas, who had observed a truce during Pope John Paul H’s seven-day visit to Colombia, resumed attacks only half an hour after he left the country for the Caribbean island of St Lucia.
Security forces said five of the victims, including three women and a member of a legal communist group, the Patriotic
Union, were killed by guerrillas in the southwestern department of Cauca. A soldier was killed and another wounded when guerrillas of the Communist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia and the pro-Castro National Liberation Army attacked two Army patrols in Arauca and Meta departments, in the east of the country. Meanwhile, about 20
guerrillas belonging to the Maoist People’s Liberation Army invaded the north-western town bf Yolombo, in Antioquia department robbed two banks and a jewellery store of about SUSIOO,O9O ($187,000), destroyed the telephone exchange and left again firing their guns in the air, said the police. Throughout his visit to Colombia, Pope John Paul strongly condemned guerrilla activity.
