Italians forgoing wine for milk—report
NZPA-Reuter Rome Wine is giving way to milk as Italy’s most popular beverage, says a national consumers’ union report.
Per capita drinking of wine ■ had fallen from an average of 79.2 litres (17.4 gallons) in 1984 to 73.2
litres (16.1 gallons) last year, whereas milk had held steady at 76.8 litres (16.9 gallons) a person. Wine consumption in 1986 was likely to drop still further, the consumer union said, mainly because of an adulteration scandal that hit the Italian
wine industry earlier this year. Twenty-three people died after drinking wine adulterated with methyl alcohol, a wood-based chemical. The report said 1986 wine sales could fall as much as 30 per cent as a result
