Car damage insurance could be compulsory
PA Wellington A Parliamentary select committee will soon consider whether third party damage insurance should be compulsory for motorvehicles and drivers. The chairman of the Communications and Road Safety Select Committee, Mr Bill Jeffries, said the issue was one which had attracted the attention of members of Parliament for some time, and had been the subject of petitions and letters to Ministers. At present, some people who had their cars damaged could not claim against the people who damaged them because they were not insured. The Insurance Council was opposed to a compulsory scheme, Mr Jeffries said, but the committee had decided to seek public comment Submissions on the idea will be heard in November.
