Standing for ‘The Flute’
Standing room has been allowed for the Bank of New Zealand season of the opera, “The Magic Flute,” which will open at the James Hay Theatre on Thursday evening. Fifty standing-room tickets will be sold for each performance of the opera, which is presented by the Canterbury Re-
gional Opera Trust. Tickets have sold well, prompting the trust to seek permission for standing room in the theatre. Standing is common in European opera houses to allow some patrons to see an opera very cheaply. Standing-room tickets for “The Magic Flute” will go on sale 45 minutes
before each performance, at $5.60.
Stools will be placed at the back of the stalls on which those with standing tickets can stand to see over the seated audience. The season of the Mozart opera, underwritten by the Bank of New Zealand, will be of six performances.
