THE MARKET Quiet but firm start to week

The Barclays’ inustrial index rose to anoter record high yesteroy, in quite active trading of 8.7 million shares. Th-index rose 12.05 poits to 2737.60, just pasing its previous peak, et last Wednesday, of 274.49. However, buyig interest seemed to'aper off slightly in the aprnoon. The Reserve lank index, which is tlculated

at noon, rose from 9949 to 10015, jumping an important psychological barrier. This index is now 61.2 per cent higher than a year ago.

Once again the index was driven by the investment company shares, with the rest of the market not quite so forward.

Investment shares were all looking good, said Mrs Ellen Croxson, market

operator for Anderson Reid and Company, Christchurch sharebroker. “Otherwise the market was much the same as on Friday,” she said, "... a reasonably quiet start to the week.”

Because of computer problems full national coverage was not available yesterday. Equiticorp, Brierley Investments, Chase, and

Omnicorp gained heavily in early trading. Brierleys recovered 20c to 580, Equiticorp 50c to 570, both on favourable press comment, and Chase put on 20c to 585. Omnicorp also rose 20c to 275.

Rainbow Corporation at 700 and NZ Marine Farms at 250 rose 30c each. Rises of 5c were chalked up by Rada, at 100 c, Smiths City Market,

at 155, Dominion Breweries at 530, and Apex at 375, but Goodman Fielder dropped 5c to 460. Ind. Equity Pacific gained 15c to 1125, and L. D. Nathan improved 11c to 665. Skellerup edged up 2c to 132 c.

Saudicorp was a loner among investment companies with a fall of 10c to 480.
