AUSTRALIA Markets lower

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed lower across the boards in patchy trading, dragged down by a weaker BHP and continuing bearish sentiment over the direction of the economy. “We expected the drop and it will continue to fall unless something bullish comes out of Hobart (national ALP conference),” a broker said. “What is happening to BHP is intriguing ... it was holding out last week and suddenly today it is falling.” BHP ended the day 20c down at 804, while Bell Resources eased 15c to 385. CSR slipped 8c to 306.

Industrial stocks continued to bear the brunt of investor nervousness over the economy, with retailers and transport stocks the main targets. David Jones fell 20c to 110, Bond Corp was 10c down at 310, TNT was 5c off at 310 and the Bell Group shed 30c to 810, while among the few to post gains was Adsteam, up 20c to 1140.

However, mining stocks were generally firmer on the back of the weak dollar with CRA up 4c to 596 and MIM firming 6c to 210.

FAI fell 26c to 664. Banks were generally easier with Westpac down 2c to 458 and the National Australia 4c to 512. The ANZ improved 4c to 472.

Media stocks also came under pressure with the Herald and Weekly Times losing 30c to 560 while 10c rises took Fairfax to 530 and News Corp to 1920.
