New jet boat record
Mike Pooley, in the new C.W.F. Hamilton 162 hull, slashed minutes off the race record in the second round, of the Businessworld Computers jet boat race series on the Waiau River on Saturday.
The Waiau River was the real winner. It was in low flow and only 20 boats of 40 starters managed to finish. Many boats were left high and dry. Both Blue Derry and Angus McFarlane withdrew with engine failure. Stuart Blanchard split his hull open and the boat was
sunk, but not lost. Trevor Harris somehow managed to park his boat up a willow tree, and Neil McDonald, from the North Island, finished about 15m out of the river with a large hole in the bottom of the hull.
Dave Matterson in the new Keelow hull from Southland was the surprise of the day with a time of 1 hr 2L mln 555, which broke the C class record by four minutes. Warran Walker was second.
Chris Goom won the B class in spite of jumping his boat across dry land to miss a
willow tree blocking his way. Results: A class: M. Pooley, 1:14.59,
B class: C. Goom, 1:25.39, 1; D. McFarlane, 1:32.25, 2; T. Kiddie, 1:32.53, 3. C class: D. Matterson, 1:21.55, 1; W. Walker, 1:33.31, 2.
