East and West
Sir,—What a contrast between H. G. Oram’s balanced, concise, sensible letter (July 3) and M. Creel’s tirade (July 4) about aid to oppressed Afghans. They certainly are oppressed, by the biggest war machine in the world, that of the Soviets. The freedom fighters whom M. Creel calls “counter-revolutionary ban-dit-terrorists” are operating on a budget which is a yery tiny fraction of the money being illspent by the Soviet terrorists doing their damnedest to subdue a people with a strong sense of their nationality. They are a bit like Kiwis, actually. I humbly suggest that perhaps M. Creel's credibility in these columns has run Its course. — Yours, ‘etc., LLOYD HABGOOD. July 4, 1986.
