Nuclear stance
Sir,—Before the anti-nuclear pressure groups declare that all New Zealanders are on their side, I wish to record my vote in favour of nuclear power. My reasons are: (a) The nuclear bomb brought World War II to a quick end, saving many lives; (b) during the last 40 years the nuclear determent has contained many situations which would have developed into a world war; (c) the peaceful use of nuclear power will supersede coal and oil. To replace the existing stable situation at this stage with a nuclear-free-zone policy would be a step towards another world war. — Yours, etc., RUSSELL MACKENZIE. July 3, 1986.
Sir,—l am not in favour of referenda for solving every contentious issue. However, I do believe that every now and then an issue arises that transcends political boundaries and is of such national importance that a referendum is the only way of finding out the true wishes of the people. I refer to the debate over A.N.Z.U.S. and the visits of
nuclear-armed vessels. On October 11 we have local body elections. A referendum held in conjunction with these would be relatively inexpensive. At the very least the result might relieve us of the endless posturing and double talk of our politicians which is becoming so incredibly boring.—Yours, etc.,
C. M. ANDERSON. July 4, 1986.
