Eye on N. Island jet boat drivers
About 40 jet boats are expected to line up on the Waiau River to contest the Greta Valley Tavern trophy race on Saturday.
Interest in the Business World Computers race series will increase with the presence of two North Island drivers, John Walters and Ted Kiddie. Three drivers will be using new boats , for the race, among them Mike Pooley in class A, whose 162 Hamilton design boat should have a top speed of more than 140km/h. John Watson will race a 4.9 metre Tennessee hull design which has never been used for jet boating before. The boat is so narrow that the driver and navigator have to sit one behind the other. The other new design will be the C.W.F. Hamilton jet unit being used by Geoff Miller. This is the second race in the Savage Marine three-race series. Among the drivers to watch will be Mike Pooley and Gus McFarlane in class A; Ken McDonald, Walters, Kiddie, Chris Goom and Rob Pooley in class B; Peter Muff and Warren Walker in class C; Grant Poultney, John Watson and Trevor Crowe in class D; Miller and Merv Cox in class E, and Ray Watson, Bruce Street and Stewart Poultney in the V 6 class.
