New hulls quicker
A 350 Chevrolet motor is lowered into a proven Sonic hull by Mr Phil Spicer (left) and Mr John Gallagher, of the Jet Boat Shop, in Hornby yesterday. The motor and jet unit have been transferred from a similar type of hull which has been very successful on the jet boat sprint scene. In its last six races, the previous boat was first four times and recorded the fastest time in three events. The new hulls, which are lighter and hence
have a better power-to-weight ratio, are becoming increasingly popular as a family boat, and are being made at the rate of one a week by the Jet Boat Shop. When finished, the racing version pictured will be capable of speeds in excess of lOOkm/h. Its first sprint will be at Winton on July 7.
