Protester beaten
NZPA-Reuter Canberra A woman anti-apartheid protester was beaten with a baton by a South African Embassy official on Monday as she attempted to kick windows at the Canberra chancellery, said the police. The acting Foreign Minister, Mr Gareth Evans, said he had asked the embassy for an explanation. He said the official
could be open to prosecution if he had used unreasonable force and South Africa were to waive his diplomatic immunity. Mr Evans emphasised that he did not condone the action of the woman, who also threw a hammer through a window during a rally marking the tenth anniversary of the Soweto riots. She was arrested along with a companion.
