Riccarton backs school library
A children’s library at« Wharenui School will be supported by the Riccarton Borough Council. The council’s community affairs committee voted on Monday to support the library, but it has not indicated how much money it will give. This will not be made public until the council approves its estimates for this financial year. The library proposal came from the Wharenui School principal, Mr Dayle Hadlee. He said in a letter to the committee that a survey of parents taken last year showed a
need for a children’s library in Riccarton. The school was planning to upgrade its library, he said, and had no objection to it being open after school. An after-school programme is run at the school between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on school days. However, Mr Hadlee said the school could not afford to provide any more books for the library and would need council help. The school asked the council for an initial grant of $4500, and a smaller, annual grant every following year.
