Free tickets for Pope
Tickets for the Papal Mass at Lancaster Park on November 24 are expected to become available in September from Catholic parishes as well as from booking agencies in the cities and main towns throughout New Zealand. Possible booking agencies in Christchurch could include the Christchurch Town Hall, Lancaster Park and the Catholic Shop in Chancery Lane, said the media officer for the Papal visit, Mr Bernard Smyth. Tickets would be available from similar
venues in Ashburton, Timaru, and Oamaru. The site controller, Mr Hillary Kearney, said entrance to the Mass would be by free tickets. More than 70,000 people are expected to attend the Mass from throughout the South Island. Special arrangements will be provided so that the handicapped will have a clear view of the Pope. Catholic parishes north of Ashburton would be hosts for visitors from other districts. Tickets would be allocated so that
groups could be together, said Mr Kearney. A stage would be built in front of the scoreboard in the south-west comer of the embankment. It will be covered with a board painted with the Papal coat, of arms. In front, a 7iri altar will be built above the level of the oval, which should provide a clear view of the Pope. A choir of about 1000 and with the New Zealand Army Band will provide entertainment before the start of the Mass, which will begin at 10.45 a.m.
