Decisions on farm debts soon

PA Wellington Decisions on how to restructure farmers’ debt should be wrapped up by the end of next week, said the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle, yesterday. But in spite of probing by the Opposition in Parliament, he refused to be drawn on details of the long-awaited farm package. Mr Moyle said an announcement would be made "as soon as possible” after the Cabinet had made its final decisions. Asked if there would be write-offs of farm mortgages and whether that would be compulsory or voluntary, Mr Moyle would only repeat that when the decisions had been made they would be announced. However, he did say the Government was looking at possible reconstruction of the debt-equity of some farmers involving the private sector and the Rural Bank.
