Desert Road reopens
PA Wanganui The Desert Road, the section of State highway 1 through the central North Island, reopened yesterday but the Turangi police have urged motorists to take extreme care. A spokesman said the road was still icy and motorists were warned not to follow too closely behind other vehicles. The road was closed from 9 p.m. on Sunday and remained closed all day Monday and overnight after an earlier snowfall iced up. However, a number of motorists chose to ignore roadblocks and “sneaked through,” the spokesman said. “There is no danger of motorists dying of exposure if they can get through the road — but if they go off the road they may not be found,” he said. The Waiouru police had to rescue 11 people on the road on Sunday night and several cars had to be towed to get them moving.
