Warning on button batteries

PA Wellington A big distributor of hearing aids in New Zealand has warned that severe injuries and even deaths have happened in the United States from swallowing button batteries. Oticon NZ, Ltd, has issued safety rules for hearing aids to prevent their misuse by young children or mentally-dis-abled people. The general manager, Mr Erik Thorsing, said between 500 and 800 cases had been reported in the United States of injuries from swallowing the small batteries which are used in calculators, watches, and games, as well as hearing aids. He did not know how many New Zealand injuries there had been, but he believed there had been “some cases of ingestion of batteries in the past.” It was extremely important that parents and guardians of the mentallydisabled and children observe the safety rules which were being displayed in all hearing clinics, Mr Thorsing said.
