Organ, oboe

This Thursday’s University School of Music lunchtime recital features original works for oboe and organ. Although this combination of instruments is not commonly heard in concert programmes, there is a wealth of repertoire for it, especially by German composers. The performers are Keith Sayers (oboe) and Martin Setchell (organ). Mr Sayers came back to live in Christchurch some years ago as a freelance performer and teacher following a period of residence in Hamburg. Mr Setchell is a senior lecturer in music and organ

tutor, who returned this year from a sabbatical which included an organ study and recital tour in Europe. Not surprisingly eighteenth century German composers dominate the programme — J. L. Krebs, J. W. Hertel and G. F. Kaufmann — with an attractive Nocturne by Marguerite RoesgenChampion as a contrast. The recital is also notable for the first Christchurch performance of some of the chorale preludes by J. S. Bach recently discovered in the Yale University Library. The recital begins at 1.10 p.m.
