New ‘Hamlet’

Hamlet a woman? He is . . . well, she is in the University of Canterbury Drama Society’s production of Shakespeare’s Play. The society warns this is not a traditional presentation of “Hamlet.” Sharon Matthews is directing the production which opens on June 20 until June 28. The show is being done solely by Dramasoc members. The cast numbers 45 with many small parts for soldiers, courtiers and peasants. The play has had many

additions and substractions from Shakespeare’s text. Parts of Tom Stoppard’s “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” and excerpts from Aristophanes and Sophocles have been added. The society has set out to tackle the play from an innovative angle. Gone are the conventions. Under the supervision of a young director the production has been a cooperative effort of actors and stage crew.

The season will be staged in the Ngaio Marsh Theatre.
