Waldheim election
Sir,—The recent election campaign of Kurt Waldheim in Austria evoked a response from Israel that bordered on the absurd. Israeli attempts to discredit Dr Waldheim for alleged war crimes come as one of the more blatant exercises in hypocrisy performed by that Government. While it accuses Dr Waldheim of being a "criminal” in an attempt to discredit him in the political arena, the Israeli Government harbours two extremely dangerous terrorists. Menachem Begin was leader of the murderous Irgun terrorist gang and past Prime Minister of Israel. Yitzhak Shamir was a member of the Stern Gang, and is now Foreign Affairs Minister in the Israeli Knesset. It seems clear that Israel should be clearing its own backyard before criticising and condemning others. — Yours, etc. V. C. WILSON. June 13, 1986.
