Driving tests
Sir,—Lois Eagles (June 11) is on her favourite hobby horse again. Tougher tests are not necessarily the answer and, as the authorities are well aware, sloppy gear-changing has not been identified as a contributing factor causing road accidents. The real answer lies in skilful handling of the vehicle, getting the feel of the wheel, and learning to negotiate traffic efficiently, expertly; in learning consideration for other road users. Courtesy, tolerance and patience are the key factors. Impatience is the most important single ingredient associated with bad driving. We tried the stamp “Automatic Licence Only” back in the dark ages. The experts proved it did not work and they
cancelled it in 1971. Let the Ministry of Transport get on with the job. I do not profess to know more than they. — Yours, etc.,
CHRIS HOLMES, Allstar Driving School. June 13, 1986.
