Pamphlet should avoid pitfall
PA Auckland Six Auckland local authorities which have joined to fight amalgamation are confident that a pamphlet they have launched to ratepayers will avoid a legal pitfail identified by the Government. The Isthmus Action Group, funded by the cities and boroughs of Ellerslie, Newmarket, Mt Eden, Mt Roskill, Mt Albert and Onehunga, has begun distributing more than 45,000 pamphlets The campaign flies in
the face of warnings from the Minister of Local Government, Dr Bassett, and the chairman of the Local Government Commission, Mr Brian Elwood, about the use of public funds for financing research and publicity to counteract the activities of the commission which is undertaking a reorganisation of local government. Mr Kevin Williams, a lawyer employed by the councils, said the group had clearly defined the objectives to come within the legislation.
