Joint pursuit leads to arrest
The victim of. a burglary, a member of the public, and the police combined in the pursuit of an alleged burglar in. Linwood last evening.
Their actions resulted in a police dog following the trail of a man who was later found hiding under a bush.
The police also recovered stolen ' property valued about $2200. It included a video recorder, clothing, and jewellery. A spokesman for the Christchurch police said that the incident began about 5.50 p.m. when a young woman arrived home at her flat in Hereford Street, Linwood. The lights were on and two men she did not know were in the lounge. The pair saw the woman and fled. She chased them for about 300 m but lost them when
they went into a park, said the spokesman. Meanwhile, the woman’s flatmate had got in touch with the police, who sent a dog handler. The dog was trying to pick up the scent of the burglars when a member of the public approached the police. He said that he believed a man was hiding under a bush on a nearby section. The dog was put on the trail and quickly found its quarry under a shrub. A man, aged 27, has been arrested, and is expected to appear in the District Court today charged with burglary. The police are seeking a second man in connection with the break-in. The police spokesman praised the actions of the woman and the member of the public which led to the arrest.
