Timber fire suspected arson
PA Rotorua Arson is suspected in the fire which wiped out up to $750,000 of export timber and a storage building at the Tasman Lumber Company’s Ngongotaha mill on Wednesday evening. Two teams of Rotorua C. 1.8. detectives are investigating the fire, one to establish the cause of the blaze, and the other making inquiries. There were reports of youths in the area at the time of the fire, just before 6 p.m.
Tasman Lumber’s chief executive, Mr Jack Butterworth, said yesterday tha $750,000 tag was a guess. It would take some time to make a full assessment.
All the timber as fully processed and ready for export. Most had been sold.
