World Vision

Sir,—On May 14 you carried a story headed “World Vision succumbs to rebel threats.” The story about World Vision’s decision to suspend relief activities in the Ethiopian province of Tigre, following an attack on a World Vision staff compound in which two medical staff were killed, was marred by a glaring error. The first paragraph refers to World Vision as “The American Christian relief aid organisation.” World Vision is not an American organisation. It is an international partnership of autonomous entities, each with its own independent board of directors, voluntarily agreeing to work together to maximise effectiveness. The policy and decision-making of this international partnership is made by an elected international board representing all entities — and is not, therefore, “American.” I would be grateful if you would publish this letter for the sake of readers who may be under a misapprehension as a result of the article.—Yours, etc., LLOYD ASHTON, managing editor, World Vision of N.Z. June 10, 1986.
