Confident sale of store cattle
All types of store cattle met a confident demand from Canterbury farmers at the Addington market yesterday. Good quality 18-month steers reached $4OO, and 18month Friesian bulls sold strongly at up to $298. A line of pregnancy-tested in-calf Angus cows sold at $316 to $352. The calf market was made up almost entirely of tussockbred calves, which were in steady demand. Marlborough interests gave strong support to the sale, and the top drafting out of a line of 175 steer calves from Glynn Wye station, Lewis Pass, made $248. The station’s heifers reached $l6O. The yarding included 720 calves and 450 adults.
Sales included:— Calves: M. J. Brown (Barrys Bay), 14 Hereford-Frie-sian cross steers at $290 to $316, and five heifers at $242; Mawahune Farming Company (Albury), 40 Hereford steers at $2lO to $228, and 24 Angus cross steers at $220 to $230; Benmore Graziers (Porters Pass), 24 Limousin-Luing
cross steers at $172 to $200; Summerfield Farming Company (Sheffield), 30 Here-ford-Angus cross steers at $lBO to $2OO, and 19 heifers at $150; J. R. A. Chaffey (Waiau), 20 Hereford heifers at $lBO to $218; Glynn Wye Station (Lewis Pass), 175 Hereford steers at $174 to $248, and 50 Hereford heifers at $l4O to $l6O.
Adults: G. V. Maginnes (Kaituna), 18 20-month Angus steers at $344 to $346, and 11 20-month Shorthorn cross steers at $334; R. J. and S. MacAulay (Sheffield), 24 incalf Angus cows at $316 to $352; Marble Point station (Hanmer Springs), 6 in-calf Hereford cows at $278; J. M. and J. A. Jones (Oxford), 87 18-month Friesian cross bulls at $236 to $298; S. G. and N. Hurle (Klondyke), 25 18month steers at $394 to $396, and 12 18-month Angus cross steers at $402; Stone Jug Farm (Kaikoura), 43 2 y 2 -year Hereford and Hereford Angus cross steers at $378 to $396; Clarence Reserve (Kaikoura), 53 18-month Hereford-Angus cross steers at $172 to $366.
