Research voyages
Two Dunedin-based fishing vessels will soon set sail on voyages to research stocks of orange roughy in New Zealand waters. The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries chose the Otago Buccaneer and the Otago Galliard for the voyages. According to the general manager of the Dunedin branch of Fletcher Fishing, Ltd, Mr N. A. Jones, the Galliard will put into Wellington this week to take on six scientists, before carrying out research into orange roughy stocks off the east coast of the North Island. Mr Jones said that the Galliard was chosen because of being able to work round-the-clock in all weather for 28 days at a time, and also had the necessary accommodation, research facilities, and sophisticated electronic equipment. the Otago Buccaneer will
survey orange roughy fishing grounds on the Chatham rise, making a four-week voyage during July with six scientists aboard, on a third such voy•age. The Research is expected to benefit New Zealand fishing companies. However, the Government has said that the use of the Otago Galliard is not a precedent for big vessels having access to traditional in-shore fishing.
