Games illegal, say police

PA Auckland A detective has told a court hearing that he seized a video gambling machine after watching children playing it and winning “multiple payouts of 20c pieces.” Detective Sergeant John Avery said in the District Court at Auckland that he seized the “Casino Winner” machine from outside a Grey Lynn dairy in January.

He seized 11 similar machines from two other dairies, two hotels, and a stand at the Auckland Easter Show.

Detective Sergeant Avery claimed the machines were illegal because they paid more in winnings than allowed under the Gambling and Lotteries

Act. He said they paid more than one 20c piece and/or a free game. Thus they were illegal games of chance. Charged with 24 counts of conducting, promoting and making a direct financial gain from an illegal game of chance, namely “Casino Winner” was Kenneth Douglas Miers, aged 37, a company director, of Ponsonby. Aristocrat Gambling Technology, Ltd, a company in which Miers owns all but one share, also faces 24 identical charges. Miers hets denied all the charges. Judge Nicholson reserved decision after hearing evidence for iy 2 days. He will deliver his decision on July 4.
