Metals soar
NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian gold shares on Tuesday soared to their highest levels for weeks on national markets following a near SUSIO rise in the international gold price in New York. The national gold index shot up 31.9 points to 944.1 — its highest level for two months — reflecting the demand from local and overseas investors. Fears that the tenth anniversary of the Soweto riots in South Africa on Monday could disrupt gold supplies, prompted anxious buying which pushed the price up SUS9.6O to 5U5350.605U5351.10 an ounce. Meanwhile, gold and platinum prices rose strongly in London as concern over the situation in South Africa spread from New York to London.
