Orbital signs U.S. deal
NZPA-AAP Perth The Orbital Engine Company Pty, Ltd, jointly owned by BHP and Sarich Technologies Trust, has signed an agreement granting Outboard Marine Corporation of the
U.S. the rights to manufacture, use and sell Orbital engine technology. OMC, which produces the Johnson and Evinrude outboard motors, is believed to be the largest manufacturer in the world and has obtained the rights for marine, lawn- | mower, and other industrial applications for an undisclosed sum. OEC directors also revealed that serious licensing negotiations were at an I advanced phase with other manufacturers in the automobile, industrial and marine industries. Although licence fees
would vary between manufacturers and different rates would be applied to different engine sizes and applications, OEC directors said evidence so far indicated that royalties would range between sAust2s and sAust6o per engine, and front-end payments would be represented by “millions of dollars.” The latest information available put the over-all world engine production at 118 million units a year, comprising 35M automobile, 1.4 M marine, four million motor-cycle engines, and the remainder primarily industrial applications.
