Staying warm
Sir, —I was disappointed to see the full-page advertisement (June 7) from the M.E.D. on effortless ways to stay warm. The M.E.D. is a monopoly retailer of power, and so we would do better to rely on heating information from independent sources. Promotion of a supposedly leisurely way of life may suit the immediate purposes of the M.E.D., but I would hate to see the department damage the longer-term interests of consumers in its own supply district, and beyond. A case can be made for making South Island hydroelectricity available as fully as possible towards productive purposes before we find it necessary to turn to thermal or nuclear generating stations.—Yours, etc., C. J. WILKINS. June 9, 1986. 1
