Funds for research
PA Auckland The Medical Research Council is setting up a special three-year fellowship for research into the hepatitis B virus which was linked with seven deaths in New Zealand last year.
The council also wants to fund research projects aimed at identifying which age-groups of children most urgently need vaccinating against hepatitis B. The cost of these research initiatives is likely to be about $BO,OOO.
About 500 cases of hepatitis B were reported in New Zealand last year. Seven people died from conditions associated with the disease.
